How to Plan Annual Leave Around Public Holidays
Public holidays can help you enjoy longer breaks without using as many annual leave days. For example, when a public holiday falls on a Thursday, taking Friday off may give you a four-day break if Saturday and Sunday are your usual rest days.
Before applying for leave, check your remaining leave balance and the holidays that apply to your state.
Use the Annual Leave Calculator Malaysia to estimate your annual leave entitlement, pro-rated leave and remaining balance.
Remember that annual leave and paid public holidays are separate entitlements under applicable employment rules. Check your company's leave policy and any applicable replacement holiday arrangements before finalising your plans.
What If You Need to Work on a Public Holiday?
Some employees in healthcare, retail, hospitality and other industries may still need to work during public holidays.
Under the Employment Act 1955, eligible employees covered by the relevant provisions may be entitled to additional pay for working on a paid public holiday. Overtime beyond normal working hours on a paid public holiday is generally payable at not less than three times the hourly rate of pay for employees covered by the applicable statutory provision.
Actual entitlement depends on your salary, occupation, employment terms and the applicable labour legislation. Sabah and Sarawak have separate labour ordinances.
How to Calculate Public Holiday Overtime Pay
To estimate your overtime earnings, you will need your salary, normal working hours and the number of overtime hours worked.
Use the Overtime Pay Calculator Malaysia to estimate your overtime pay for normal working days, rest days and public holidays.
If you are unsure whether your payslip is correct, check with HR and confirm which public holiday and overtime rules apply to your employment.
